Handheld Technique Workshop

There is a living art beyond the suspended gong: the hand-held gong, played in motion, carried around and above the body as sound moves through space. It is sometimes called the dance of the gong, and it opens a whole new dimension of what you can create and hold for others.

In this two-hour workshop, you will learn the foundations of hand-held gong technique, both the craft and the presence it requires. Working hands-on, you will explore the core movements that give this practice its power: the sweeping strokes that clear a space, the wheel and the dip that lift and move energy, the shaking and twisting that break up what has grown stagnant, and the steady heartbeat that grounds the room. You will learn to move with intention, to read the space and the body in front of you, and to hold the heightened awareness this work asks for.
